WICE - American Revolution in Paris
Great news! WICE is having a month-long fundraiser in November: a combination of walks and talks detailing "The American Revolution in Paris"!
Come join us in November for a fascinating glimpse into the intricate relationships and connections between France and the American colonies during the American War of Independence. Learn the backstory of the American Revolution as it took place in the streets, parks, avenues, and hidden courtyards of Paris.
This program consists of four talks with presentations, and three walks.
The Talks
Talk 1: Monday, 04 November
This session highlights key locations tied to the early French aid in the American Revolution. We’ll examine Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais's clandestine military supply operations at Hôtel des Ambassadeurs de Hollande, the signing of crucial treaties at Hôtel de Coislin, and the final resting place of La Fayette at Cimetière de Picpus. Other discussion items include the Parisian residences of John Paul Jones and General Rochambeau and their contributions to the American cause. Details here

Talk 2: Monday, 11 November
In this talk, we delve into the military and diplomatic efforts of the French during the American Revolution. We’ll cover Admiral de Grasse’s memorial at Eglise Saint-Roch and explore sites like Square Yorktown and Place des Etats-Unis, which honor the Franco-American alliance. Key moments, including the signing of the Treaty of Paris at Hôtel d’York and the roles of Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, will also be discussed. Details here

Talk 3: Monday, 18 November
This session covers the secretive support for the American insurgents and the enduring Franco-American relationships. We’ll discuss Thomas Jefferson’s Parisian residence, the Café Procope, and the historic bookshops on Quai des Grands Augustins. We’ll also explore Hôtel des Monnaies, where Franklin and Jefferson found significant support during their time in Paris.. Details here

Talk 4: Monday, 25 November
Our final talk explores the post-revolutionary era and the continued exchanges between France and the United States. We’ll cover the architectural influence of Hôtel de Salm, the Revolutionary Assemblies, and the fates of American patriots like Thomas Paine during the French Revolution. The session concludes with an examination of Hôtel des Invalides, where Paris honored George Washington after his death. Details here

The Walks
Walk 1: Wednesday, 06 November
This walk begins in Auteuil and ends on the Champs Elysées, taking you to the historical residences of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. You'll visit the site of Franklin's home and office in Passy, see statues and monuments at Square Yorktown and Place des Etats-Unis, and learn about key figures like George Washington and Rochambeau. The walk concludes with a visit to the site of Thomas Jefferson’s residence, offering a rich overview of the American-French connection during the Revolution. Details here

Walk 2: Wednesday, 13 November
In this walk, we delve into the military and diplomatic efforts of the French during and after the American Revolution. We’ll begin at Palais du Luxembourg, visit John Paul Jones’s residence nearby, and go by Café Procope, where French and American revolutionaries met and made plans. Along the Quai des Grands Augustins and at the Hotel des Monnaies we learn how the compatriots worked together. Ending on rue Jacob, we see the building where the Treaty of Paris was signed, which gave hard-won independence to the American colonies. Details here

Walk 3: Wednesday, 20 November
On this final walk, you'll explore the enduring ties between France and the young United States. Beginning at Musée d’Orsay, you'll learn about the Hôtel de Salm, admired by Jefferson, and visit key sites like Place de la Concorde and Hôtel de Coislin, where critical treaties were signed. The walk takes you through the Tuileries and ends at La Bourse de Commerce, a building closely linked to the lives of Franklin and Jefferson. Details here

Prices
There are several options for participating in, and paying for, this event:
- The Full Package: Attend all four talks and all three walks for €100 (includes a 3-month membership to WICE).
- Talks Only: Attend just the four talks for €60 (includes a 3-month membership to WICE).
- Walks Only: Attend just the three walks for €50 (Includes a 3-month membership to WICE).
- Individual Events: Attend events on an individual basis for €20 an event.
The Organizer - Mary Jo Padgett
Mary Jo Padgett is a journalist, teacher, former elected official, public relations consultant, and independent historian, with a special interest in the French connection to the American Revolution.
While living in Paris she was introduced to the book "Paris: Birthplace of the U.S.A." She has used this book as the foundation for walks and presentations, which she has conducted since 2013 for the American Library in Paris, the American Embassy, private groups, and WICE.
Mary Jo lives in North Carolina, and does presentations at Lifelong Learning programs at community colleges, Furman University, Wofford College, and others. She is donating all proceeds from this series to WICE.
