The book we are going to look at this month is "Notre Dame du Nil" by Scholastique Mukasonga.

"Notre Dame du Nil" received the very coveted "Prix Renaudot 2012".

Isolated on a high plateau at the source of the Nile, an elite school educates the flower of  Rwandan girlhood, both Hutu and Tutsi. The nuns prepare the young women for a suitable marriage, and a Christian and democratic life in a society emerging from feudalism and colonialism.  Despite the serenity and isolation of this place, the conflicts  in the greater society are all too evident. We see the customs, the superstitions, the hopes for progress, the tensions between Hutu and Tutsi and between the Belgian colonizers and the native Rwandans, and a way of life in between tradition and modernity. The explosion that follows prefigures the ethnic cleansing that will erupt twenty years later in 1994.
