Chiascuro, grisaille and glazing are all techniques used by the old masters that still remain valid today. Egg tempera and oil were used, and painting grounds and mediums were made with animal skin glues. They required heating and were vulnerable to cracking and molding. Painting mediums and varnishes contained toxic solvents. Now synthetic vinyl and acrylic resins have replaced these traditional materials. Similar effects can now be obtained with less toxic and easier to manage products. This series of classes follows the preparation of a painting from a drawing or photograph, through the steps of preparing the ground, enlarging the source image, rendering light and shade in monochrome and then tinting it with transparent glazes.
If you'd like to learn more about the basic techniques of painting using modern materials, this is the class for you. Even if you do not intend to be a painter, it will give you a fuller appreciation of the process behind many of the museum pieces you enjoy and admire.

Instructor: Jan Olsson holds a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and is an engaging teacher with many years of experience teaching. She is also a highly skilled practicing artist who exhibits internationally.
