Galleries, Photography and Artists’ Ateliers

Continuing our exploration from Part One, we pick up with a special look at how galleries work. Then turning our attention to photography, we conduct a special guided visit to Paris Photo. Our third class will be an outing to the studio of a well-known French artist -- students will vote to select, guided by our Instructor.
  • Galleries: How can you tell a good gallerist? How do you access and assess information from the gallery? How does gallery pricing work? What should you expect from a gallery-based acquisition?
  • Photography: We’ll explore the explosion of interest in photography as a collectable medium. How to understand value: print types and edition numbers. Visit to Paris Photo. Meet gallerists, assess target works.
  • Atelier visit: Buying direct from the artist. Benefits and drawbacks. Visit to a photographer's atelier chosen democratically by students.
Instructor: Caroline Etter. Art consultant, historian of art, friend to collectors and artists both, Caroline has been immersed in the Paris art scene for 15 years. After graduating with a degree in 20th-century decorative arts from the Sorbonne, she started her career working at the Villa Médicis in Rome and at Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Since then she’s been a curator, a journalist and a gallery manager working with private and corporate clients.

Caroline shares her deep knowledge of the art market both in France and internationally through her firm, city | art insider, working with art lovers discovering the art market and advising established collectors of contemporary art, photography and design.
