Kerry Howley is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow, staff writer at New York Magazine, and author of two critically acclaimed works of creative nonfiction, the most recent of which was named by The New York Times Book Review as one of the year’s “Ten Best Books.” She is a three-time National Magazine Award nominee and a 2023 finalist for the National Books Critics Circle Award.

She has written feature stories for New York Magazine on subjects as varied as the poetry of Jorie Graham, a rivalry in the field of paleontology, and the isolation of Britney Spears. Her fiction and nonfiction have been published in The Paris Review, Harpers, Granta, and many other venues. Prior to joining the staff of New York Magazine, she was an assistant professor at the University of Iowa’s celebrated Nonfiction Writing Program.

Course Description:

This course is designed for anyone working in the realm of facticity, whether that means traditional essays, reportage, biography, lyric essays, or experimental forms. Together we will address the major challenges of crafting a piece of writing: structure, scene, point of view, and so on. But we will have a special emphasis on voice: that is, how do the best writers conjure a distinct consciousness on the page? How can you create the sense of a singular mind behind a piece of writing? This workshop is for writers of all levels. We will read and discuss work by every participant over the course of the week, as well as some short, masterful examples of voice in nonfiction.

Preparation:

Please submit 2-25 double-spaced pages of creative nonfiction, however you choose to define it, by May 1, 2026 to admin.pww@wice-paris.org. Please include your masterclass name with your materials.

You can send a selection from a larger work, a whimsical experiment, scattered notes toward something more coherent, or a polished piece you feel would benefit from feedback.

Agent Consultations:

Available exclusively to participants who have enrolled in a masterclass, you can register for one or two agent consultations for an additional fee.  More information to come.

Cancellation Policy:
