The Art of Novel Writing

June 24, 25, 26, 27, 28
9am - 12 noon

Writer-in-Residence: Samantha Chang

Workshop description:
Every novelist faces this challenge: to write a long story that will seduce, thrill, and ultimately satisfy readers enough that they will be compelled to finish it. In this workshop, we will develop ways to make readers fall in love with your book. The discussions will focus on techniques for creating magnetic characters, a compelling voice, and a satisfying narrative structure. We will discuss successful novels of the past and present, and explore the creative processes involved in writing long works. The workshop is designed for writers who have a full-length project underway.

Requirements:
Submit in advance a manuscript of 12–20 pages. This excerpt should include a scene involving one of the novel’s main characters. Along with your excerpt, please include a one-page synopsis that contains the following information: a summary of the narrative arc, a description of where the attached pages fit within that framework, and a question that you’re currently facing as you contemplate your novel.

Your registration also entitles you to a one-to-one consultation with your workshop faculty member, included in your workshop registration.  If you wish to take advantage of further consultations with a literary agent, it can be booked from the website.

If you wish to attend the Literary Dinner, please reserve your place here.
