Cimitière du Calvaire is the smallest — and some say the oldest — of all Parisian cemeteries. It is located at the top of Montmartre, next to Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre (and just a few steps from Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre).

The cemetery is mainly home to members of the great aristocratic families of lower Montmartre (now the 9th arrondissement) who returned from emigration, but it also contains a few graves of residents of “upper Montmartre.” Currently, only the descendants of those buried there can still be buried there.

It is only open to the public one day a year: La Toussaint.

As a general rule, visitors on La Toussaint are taken through the cemetery in small groups, led by a French guide.

The current concept is that a WICE group of eight will meet outside and go in as a group. One of our English-speaking French members, Caroline Harvey, has volunteered to accompany us to explain, in English, what the guide is saying. We will have coffee at a local café afterwards.

This is a free event.

Additional details will be posted as we get closer to the event date.
