Sayaka Murata is one of the most exciting voices of a new generation of Japanese novelists.  Her English-language debut, Convenience Store Women (Konbini Ningen) won the prestigious Akutagawa prize and has since been translated into more than 30 languages.

Set in a Tokyo shop, Convenience Store Woman is an ironic and sharp-eyed commentary on the work culture and the pressures to conform, as well as a charming and fresh portrait of an unforgettable heroine.

Ginny Tapley Takemori’s English translation was shortlisted for the Best Translated Book Award and was rated one of The New Yorker’s best books of 2018.

‘A thrifty and offbeat exploration of what we must each leave behind to participate in the world.’ The New York Times.

RTBF.
