"John O’Hara is often described as one of the most prominent American writers of the 20th century.

Appointment in Samarra (Rendez-vous à Samarra) is his compelling study of class, money and sexuality the elite of a Pennsylvania town, set just after the 1929 stock market crash.

The work has been acclaimed for capturing the enclosed atmosphere and bitter politics of small-town life, while still conveying the tenderness of intimate relationships.

It was recently republished in French and English, allowing O’Hara’s sharp style and gritty realism to capture new readers.

‘Appointment in Samarra lives frighteningly in the mind.’ John Updike
