A beautiful portrait can give us insight into the expression, personality and mood of a subject. The focus is usually on the face but context and background may be included.

This course offers participants a special understanding of professional portraiture by analyzing the great figures of the contemporary scene. You’ll get practical advice on applying lighting techniques. Plenty of practical exercises are included, always under the advice and guidance of the tutor. A review and suggestions for your images will follow.

Students can expect to:

  • learn the keys to portraiture photography;
  • learn about lighting techniques;
  • get hands-on experience with practical assignments;
  • participate in a friendly critique of their work.

Course Requirements: Suitable for all levels of photographers.  Participants are to bring a camera that can manually set ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, and/or are able to set a manual mode.  A lens of approximately 50mm full frame is highly recommended.

About the Instructor: Juan Manuel Abellán graduated in Advertising and Visual Arts and holds a Master in Art, philosophy and aesthetics, specialised in Photography and Contemporary Art.  He has worked with the agency Magnum Photo and exhibited his work in several exhibitions, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
