SJ091 Drawing out the artist in you: basic techniques for beginners

What makes drawings look so "real"?  Your drawings will pop out of the page when you learn to render depth to the shadows and brilliance to the highlights.

This class is designed to help you create a three dimensional illusion to your drawings. Guided with close observation, you will follow a progressive series of exercises to express depth, reliefs and volumes using strong contrast or delicate gradations.  We will explore the use of black and white chalks and lead pencils, using white and coloured paper. You will learn the logic of light as it hits a variety of surfaces (reflective, absorbing, transparent, translucent...).  This course is ideal for improving your drawing and painting. You will be astonished with your results !

Spotlight: In this course, we explore basic shading techniques using different forms of cross hatching and gradations. Our subject matter will be light over various black and white subjects, such as china, drapery and paper.

Instructor:  Claude Pollack received her degree from l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. She has taught drawing and has worked with sculpture and painting in France and in Italy for theatre and interior decoration. She has also had experience as a film editor as well as a set designer. She has been teaching at WICE over the past 14 years, including the popular Paris Sketchbook series, rain or shine.
