Bilingual Book Club is opening its reading year with Irish novelist Anne Enright’s The Gathering which won the 2007 Booker Prize.

The Gathering is a powerful tale of the nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan who gather in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother Liam.  It wasn't the drink that killed him – although that certainly helped – it was what happened to him as a boy in his grandmother's house, in the winter of 1968.  Enright writes with a lightness and beauty of the prose yet The Gathering manages to deal with love, death, pain, fear and pleasures.
