PA131 Fearless Photography: Breaking the Rules (27 Apr 2026)

This two-session virtual course is for photographers (beginners and advanced) who dare to break a few rules along the creative path.

Session I (Monday, 13 April):

We will begin with a review of photography “best practices” and what makes a memorable photo. You have to be aware of the “rules” to know when the moment is right to break them.

We will explore the beauty and drama of intentionally going rogue and why that might make a photograph even more memorable. We’ll study the dissidents—for example, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Saul Leiter, and Sally Mann. And we will tackle assignments that will push boundaries and upend perspectives … all with a goal of yielding truly creative results.

Session II (Monday, 27 April):

In the second session we will discuss the photos you completed during the first class and your follow-on homework assignments. We'll learn, as always, from the varying reactions and insights of the class members.

Price:

The price for both sessions, held on Zoom, will be included in the initial fee.

You will automatically be registered for the second session when you register for the first one.

The Zoom link will be sent in the 7-day and 1-day reminder emails.

About the Instructor

Meredith Mullins is a popular photo instructor and fine-art photography mentor, an internationally exhibited photographer, and a winner of international photography competitions, including the Grand Concours Photo sur Paris, PX3 Competition, Julia Margaret Cameron Award, Photographer’s Forum, and Worldwide Gala Photo Awards. She is the author of the award-winning book In a Paris Moment, a leader of photo adventure tours, and the Co-Founder and Director of the International Fine Art Photography Competition.

PY131 Guided Visit to Photography Festival Circulation(s) (13 May 2026)

A springboard for artists and a trendsetter, Circulation(s) is the place to be and a reflection of the vibrant contemporary European art scene, as well as the must-see event for the photography of tomorrow. Its program is based on a public call for submissions and an annual search by the artistic direction of the Fetart collective, which welcomes three new members this
year.

The Circulation(s) festival returns to CENTQUATRE-PARIS, a leading cultural institution in eastern Paris, for its 16th edition, from March 21 to May 17, 2026, with the presentation of series by 26 artists of 15 different nationalities. With no pre determined theme, the projects capture the pulse of young European photography, its intuitions, its challenges, and its commitments.

Each year, the Circulation(s) festival highlights a particular European photography scene in its “Focus” section, one that is underrepresented in its call for submissions and among the artists regularly exhibited. In 2026, after Ukraine and Lithuania, Ireland will be invited to join, on the eve of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Students can expect:

A guided tour of the festival
An analysis of the artists' work while visiting, the questions they pose and how they use the photography medium.
A friendly feedback session after the exhibition

About the instructor:

Juan Manuel Abellán is a professional fine art photographer and photography tutor based in Paris since 2007. He graduated in Advertising and Visual Arts and holds a Master in Art, philosophy and aesthetics, specialized in Photography and Contemporary Art. He has worked with the agency Magnum Photo and exhibited his work in several exhibitions, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Passionate about photography, Juan Manuel works as a freelance photographer with a specialization in portrait, reportage and fine art photography. He is also an experimented leader of photography adventure tours around the world.

Designed for photography enthusiasts, this 4-hour outdoor workshop explores the art of portrait-making, with a focus on atmosphere, composition, and guiding your subject to feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Moving beyond basic composition, the session explores how to create intentional, atmospheric portraits using natural light and available light—whether shoot with a camera or a smartphone.

The workshop is structured in three parts:

1 hour of technical briefing: refining your understanding of light, portrait composition, and key settings adapted to outdoor conditions

2 hours of guided shooting: hands-on practice in real locations, working with light, background, and directing a subject

1 hour of group review: collective editing session with feedback on the images produced during the workshop

This workshop places a strong emphasis on:

Creating mood and atmosphere in portrait photography

Using natural and available light to shape depth, tone, and emotion

Moving from street photography reflexes to a more intentional portrait approach

Building a connection with your subject to create authentic and expressive images

Ideal for photography enthusiasts who want to deepen their practice, develop a more personal visual language, and explore portraiture in the unique light and environments of Paris.
