Sandro Veronesi’s The Hummingbird (Il Colibri / Le Colibri) traces a Florentine family and its experiences of life and its complex emotional challenges. Told through a myriad of narrative styles, The Hummingbird is a rich portrait of human existence in all its glory, love, and sorrow.
The Hummingbird was awarded the 2021 Premio Strega and the Prix du Livre Étranger 2021 France Inter / Le Point.
‘The Hummingbird is a masterly novel, a brilliantly conceived mosaic of love and tragedy,’ Ian McEwan.
‘Le colibri de Sandro Veronesi est un chef-d’œuvre bouleversant. D’une beauté absolue jusque dans les moindres détails,’ Corriere della Sera.
How to Build a Story (Let Your Madman Out!)
Taught by Ellen Bryson, 22 October
This two-hour class is designed to free up writers' subconscious creativity (their “madman”). Using photos, props, and short verbal cues, participants developed characters and storylines, and finished by writing the potential beginning of a short story or novel.
Ellen said, “Every time I teach this workshop the attendees surprise me. This time their natural creativity came through in such interesting ways . . . quirky, thoughtful, and voicing a little of their inner madman.”
And the attendees?
“. . . I liked it a lot.” – Mary Bartlett
“I felt the content was thought provoking and effective in being able to get something down on paper and understanding the process. It left me wanting more, which is great!” – Tess Whelan
“The exercises . . . were really a nice way of getting at a story!” – Maxima Baudissin
“. . . the class was great – good content, well organized and presented. In addition, Ellen was encouraging and her enthusiasm infectious. I’ll watch for her future classes!” – Anne Daignaut
