Writers are urged (relentlessly) to "find their voices"-- a frustrating bit of advice if ever there was one. Voice is among the most elusive of craft terms.  What is it exactly?  Of what does it consist?  How does one go about developing it?  Certainly voice includes style, but that is so unique and organic to each writer that it only further confuses the issue.  This workshop will dismantle voice into practical (and comprehensible) elements as they relate to longer fiction: narration (point of view), character development and theme.  We'll also discuss the ways in which voice is supported, or stymied, by structure.  To aid in our exploration the seminar will include short readings, as relevant, by Marilynne Robinson, Edward P. Jones and Marlon James among others.

Requirements: Submit a 15-25 page draft of your work by Friday, 31 May 2016. See the Manuscript Submission Guidelines page of the Paris Writers' Workshop website for more details.

This course is a part of Paris Writers' Workshop, a week-long program that includes a mandatory Registration Reception on Sunday, 26 June 2016. For more information about the program, please visit www.pariswritersworkshop.org.
