La Manufacture des Gobelins was founded as a dye works in the mid-15th century by Jean Gobelin. In 1662, Louis XIV purchased the Gobelins factory and founded a royal tapestry and furniture works that produced some of the most famous tapestries to date, including those in Versailles. After 1697, the factory specialized solely in the art of tapestry making and continues to do so today.
