Who hasn’t seen the Japanese woodblock print of small fishing boats being jostled by huge waves while a serene Mount Fuji peeks from the landscape behind the unbridled sea? It is part of Hokusai’s famous series “The 36 Views of Mount Fuji”. The Guimet museum is lucky to have more than a hundred works by Hokusai, who in his time was affectionately called the “old man who is crazy about painting.”
This exhibit presents his work in all its diversity, and it also explains how the collection was constituted. Hokusai’s work was enthusiastically received in France at the end of the 19th century when Japan reopened its borders, and the Japanese aesthetic influenced many artists, particularly the Impressionists.
