Spanish artist Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) lived during a fascinating time in Spanish history: a decadent empire, torn between alliances with France and England. This course offers an overview of Spanish history between the reigns of Ferdinand VI and Ferdinand VII, focusing on historic development but also on the cultural evolution of Spanish society during that time.
This course is offered as a compliment to the exhibit “Goya Graveur” which is running at the Petit Palais until June 8, 2008, providing a historical perspective to Goya’s work.
Instructor: Ángel Alonso Arroba is currently a policy analyst for Latin American affairs at OECD in Paris. Despite his professional focus, Ángel is passionate about Spanish history and culture. He holds BAs in journalism and anthropology from the University of Sevilla and an MA in international security from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
