Montparnasse will forever be associated with struggling artists and writers who lived in garrets and haunted the cafés around the Carrefour Vavin to have coffee, exchange ideas, flirt, and keep warm. Until Baron Haussmann annexed the 14th to Paris in the 1860s, this was a bucolic area with kitchen gardens and tumbledown houses.

It was easy to find cheap lodgings, and many immigrants fleeing from persecution and looking for freedom settled here. The Breton community in Paris originally settled here too when they got off the train in Montparnasse.

Between the wars both artists and members of the “lost generation” were attracted to the exciting bohemian atmosphere of Montparnasse, and they too contributed to the legend. Although many of the old haunts have disappeared, there is still much to discover in this lively arrondissement.

Come join our popular series exploring the rich history and intimate secrets of Parisian neighborhoods. These are participative tours so if you have favorite places to share, please contact Lee Hubert at wice@wice-paris.org, mentioning her name in the subject line. Those who wish may join us afterwards for lunch.

Instructor: Lee Hubert, B.A. Boston Univ., French and English, is a long-time resident of Paris.
